Assessment: Psychologists at PFPA provide autism assessments for individuals ranging in age from toddlers to adults, with an approach that adapts to each individual’s developmental stage and lived experience. We specialize in assessing individuals who mask as well as those who present with common co-occurring diagnoses such as ADHD, anxiety, and dysgraphia. Our autism assessments are individualized, collaborative, and designed to provide meaningful insights and an integrative support plan, not just a diagnosis.

Who might seek an autism assessment at PFPA?
Families and individuals often reach out for assessment when they notice:

  • A young child showing early communication, social, or sensory differences (e.g., delayed language, aversion to certain noises/textures, repetitive play, withdrawal, limited pretend play)
  • A family seeking comprehensive documentation when pursuing support through the Katie Beckett or NOW/COMP waiver (initial application and renewal)
  • A school-age child struggling with behavior, emotional regulation, or peer relationships
  • A teen who may appear to mask their challenges while experiencing anxiety, burnout, or executive functioning difficulties
  • An adult seeking clarity about past experiences, identity, or relationships, often after suspecting they may be autistic

Individual Therapy : At PFPA, therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum is strengths-based, practical, and tailored to each client’s goals. Our team supports children, teens, and adults in areas such as emotion regulation, sensory coping strategies, social navigation, life transitions, and building self-advocacy skills. We recognize that effective care often includes the systems around an individual, and upon request, we partner closely with families, schools, and other care providers to ensure consistency, communication, and wraparound support.

We do not approach therapy with a goal of “fixing” autism, but rather with a commitment to honoring each person’s way of thinking, processing, and interacting with the world. Sessions may focus on building emotional insight, developing communication strategies that feel authentic, or creating daily routines that reduce overwhelm. For some clients, therapy also includes exploring autistic identity, processing burnout, or navigating late-diagnosis experiences with compassion and clarity.

Parent Coaching: Raising a neurodivergent child can bring moments of both deep connection and real uncertainty. At PFPA, we offer parent coaching to help caregivers better understand their child’s developmental profile, respond to challenging behaviors with confidence, and create home routines that support emotional regulation, sensory needs, and executive functioning. We also provide support for parents navigating a new autism diagnosis, whether you’re processing it emotionally, explaining it to others, or seeking resources for services like the Katie Beckett Waiver.

Parent coaching sessions are collaborative and individualized, and may focus on:

  • Understanding your child’s unique brain style and communication cues
  • Creating visual routines and consistent expectations
  • Supporting transitions, sleep, or screen time in neurodivergent-friendly ways
  • Reducing overwhelm and increasing connection during daily stress points
  • Advocating effectively in school, medical, or community settings
